ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—Since 1996, Las Vegas’ Terrible Herbst Motorsports have successfully raced in the SCORE Trophy Truck division, but have fallen short of winning either the SCORE Baja 1000 or the SCORE Baja 500 in the marquee racing division in the sport.
One of the winningest families with the greatest love for desert racing since family patriarch, the late Jerry Herbst, enjoyed the deserts of Baja California, as well as those of the United States, second-gen Herbst racer Tim Herbst, 61, hopes to end the skid in next week’s BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada, Baja California.
AN EVENT OF INTERNATIONAL STATURE
Race festivities in Ensenada will be held May 29 to June 2 for the second round of the 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship.
With over 260 entries expected at the start line, 246 entries to date include racers entered to make the trip to Mexican soil from 25 U.S. States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, France, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, and Peru.
Among the U.S. States represented are California, New York, Washington, Florida, Hawaii, Ilinois and Nevada.
In the most recent entry list, the classes with the most entries so far are SCORE Trophy Truck with 34, followed by Trophy Truck Spec with 33, Pro UTV Open (23), Pro UTV FI (19), Class 10 (16), and Pro UTV Stock (15).
Among the motorcycle classes with the most entries so far are Pro Moto Ironman (solo riders) with 13 and Pro Moto Unlimited with 10.
‘LOS TERRIBLES’
Next Saturday’s BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 500 will be another perfect opportunity for Tim Herbst, to earn one of the few victories he is missing in this sport. He almost achieved the win in this race in June 2001, when problems in the transmission of his old Ford F-150 Smith built 4x4, forced him to cross the finish line driving the last several miles in reverse, being overtaken in just before the finish of that SCORE Baja 500 by Dan Smith/Dave Ashley of the Enduro Racing team.
That was perhaps the closest opportunity to win the SCORE Baja 500 for Tim Herbst and his older brother Ed Herbst, as Tim Herbst run this race as the DOR without his older brother.
Second driver this year in the No. 19 1 Nine Industries Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy Truck will be Las Vegas’ James Dean, 27, from Las Vegas, who will be replacing his father Pat Dean who will be absent as a driver in the race due to a medical issue.
It has been 28 years since Terrible Herbst Motorsports won the checkered flag in the SCORE Baja 500 in SCORE Trophy Truck, by the team won in the overall and unlimited Class 1 titles in both 2002 and 2003 with the youngest of the three brothers, Troy Herbst, and Larry "Mr. Baja" Roeseler aboard the spectacular Smith-built Truggy Smith open-wheel unlimited desert race car.
NEW BLOOD OF LOS TERRIBLES
More 1 Nine Industries Trucks will carry the Terrible Herbst Motorsport colors, with Tim Herbst's sons Thor Herbst, 24, of Las Vegas, and Pierce Herbst, 20, of Las Vegas, in Trophy Truck Spec No. 219, and his cousin E.J. Herbst, 23, of Las Vegas, son of Ed Herbst, will be behind the wheel of Trophy Truck Spec No. 263.
E.J. Herbst, will have 38-year-old Ryan Millen from New Zealand as his second driver on the second round of the SCORE World Desert Championship 2024, trying to win his first race in the Trophy Truck Spec class, no easy feat against more than 30 class opponents.
DOUBLE DOWN FOR FLEMATE
Mexico’s Oliver Flemate, 46, from Ensenada, will compete in the BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 500 in two different classes, Trophy Truck Spec and Class 11, so it will be a busy race for him and his team of mechanics through the mysterious terrains of Baja California.
Flemate will drive his TSCO Racing Trophy Truck Spec, but under the No. 260 truck of 37-year-old Santiago Creel, from Mexico City, to try to fight for the 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship after Creel's third place finish in the King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250, in another TSCO Racing Truck.
And in Class 11, Oliver Flemate will join forces with his talented second driver Antonio Espinoza, 30 years old and from Ensenada, who have a streak of 6 consecutive victories in SCORE with his Flemate Racing Stock VW Sedan.
BAJA WITH A NASCAR FLAVOR
Justin Lofton, 38, of Lockney, Texas, and Brendan Gaughan, 48, of Las Vegas, were both part of the NASCAR Series for several years, having enjoyed desert racing for their fathers in the United States and Mexico, especially in the deserts of Nevada, Baja California, Arizona and California.
Now Lofton, who has participated in 94 races in the NASCAR Trucks Series, will be behind the wheel of his No. 41 SCORE Trophy Truck built by Mason Motorsports, trying to get his first class victory in SCORE and in SCORE Trophy Truck.
Gaughan raced in the three featured NASCAR Series over 14 years (67 NASCAR Cup races, 219 in NASCAR Infinity Series and 217 in the NASCAR Truck Series.
Gaughan, now a SCORE regular again, will drive his HMS-Chevy buggy in Class 1, with 45-year-old Buddy Feldkamp, of Redlands, Calif., as second driver on the 483.06-mile race course.
RACE WEEK FESTIVITES
The colorful contingency row and tech inspection of all the participating vehicles will be held on Friday, May 31 on Ensenada's Boulevard Costero from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, adjacent to the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. With the Manufacturer’s Midway and multiple local vendors, the pre-race pageantry draws upwards 50,000 people for the event that is free to the public.
On Saturday, June 1, the green flag will drop on the Boulevard Costero, with the first motorcycle departing at 2:30 a.m. PT, while the first 4-wheeler will depart at 6:15 a.m. PT, having to overcome a 486-mile race course. While the fastest vehicles are expected to finish in approximately 10 hours, all vehicles Will have a 20-hour time limit to become official finishers in the elapsed-time race.
The awards celebration will be held on Sunday, June 2 at the Cathedral Hall of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center at 12:30 p.m.
Qualifying, contingency and the race days will be part of SCORE Live with Rat Sult on SCORE's official YouTube channel and also its official Facebook account. Tracking of the race vehicles will be available during the race through the SCORE website.
METHOD RACE WHEELS QUALIFYING
SCORE Trophy Trucks, SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend and Trophy Truck Spec classes will hold the Method Race Wheels Qualifying session on Thursday, May 30. Starting with at 7 a.m. PT at a private venue, this event is closed to the public.
The Method Race Wheels Qualifying will determine the starting order in those three classes for the race, as this is the first time in history that all SCORE four races will hold a qualifying session.
SCORE Live will air the Method Race Wheels Qualifying through the SCORE website.
Start order for all of the other classes in this race will be determined by a random draw for positions within each class.
GRAN HISTORIA
This year’s SCORE World Desert Championship includes another special tribute to the iconic SCORE Baja 500.
The SCORE Baja 500 is one of the top motorsports events in the world. It was started originally in 1969 by the NORRA organization. After NORRA was removed from Baja after the 1972 race, the local Baja Sports Committee produced the 1973 event. Mickey Thompson and his SCORE International organization were invited by the Mexican government to take over the event starting in 1974.
Sal Fish ran and later owned and produced the SCORE Baja 500 for 39 years until he sold SCORE in December of 2012.
The first Baja 500 organized and produced by SCORE was held on July 26, 1974 in Ensenada as the first of nearly 170 SCORE Baja races.
This year’s SCORE Baja 500 will start for the 50th time in Ensenada and finish for the 46th time in Ensenada.
TRAILS TO GLORY
SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva and SCORE Co-Race Director Rodo Fernandez, have put together another memorable race course to challenge the world’s best desert racers. The final distance is 483.06 miles.
The course runs in a clockwise direction out of and back to the start/finish line compound in Ensenada, traveling through such noted areas as Ojos Negros, Tres Hermanos, El Alamo, Santa Catarina, the Summit (4,140 feet above sea level), Cohabuzo Junction, Saldana, La Ventana access, El Arrajal wash, San Matias Pass, Mike’s Sky Rancho, Simpson’s Road to Valle de Trinidad, West to Llano Colorado, San Vicente Wash, Erendira, Santo Tomas, Uruapan, Rancho El Mezcal, Ojos Negros, and back to the finish line in Ensenada.
The course has two complete stop physical checkpoints, 240 total virtual checkpoints and 13 speed zones for a total of 40.78 miles.
Physical Checkpoint 1 is located at race mile 245.64 (near Eolic Field) and Checkpoint 2 is at rm354.71 (Llano Colorado).
Among the other infamous Baja washes that the course will go through are: El Mezcal Wash, La Rajadura Wash, El Tule Wash, Alamito Wash (before the Summit), En Medio Wash (between the Summit and Cohabuzo), San Matias Wash, Los Encinos Wash, and El Salado Wash.
All Sportsman classes, Class 11, 5/1600, Baja Challenge and Class 7SX will run a reduced course of a total of 456.91 miles.
Pre-running starts at race mile 36.95 and finishes at rm446.11. The section from rm9.30 to rm33.12 may be run outbound only on Friday, May 31.
VERY SPECIAL GRAND MARSHAL
One of the most recognizable and admired figures in all of Baja California, entrepreneur, racer, and race team owner, Rodrigo Ampudia Sr has agreed to be the Grand Mashal for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500.
Ampudia, 67, of Ensenada, Mexico, co-founder of the popular Papas & Beer night clubs in Ensenada and Rosarito Beach, a multi-time SCORE Baja racer winner, and he is the owner and leader of Team Papas, one of the premier desert racing teams in the SCORE World Desert Championship.
Ampudia Sr has earned seven class wins in his SCORE racing career, but will quickly tell you that he is proudest of his three sons and what they continue to accomplish in desert racing.
In his racing career, Rodrigo Ampudia Sr had three wins in the SCORE Baja 500 (1992, 1994, and 2009), one in the SCORE San Felipe 250 (2009), and three in the iconic SCORE Baja 1000 (1990, 1994, and 2017).
In his 2017 class victory, Ampudia Sr was the second driver for fellow Mexican patriarch racer Gustavo Vildosola Sr, in the SCORE TT Legend class (SCORE Trophy Truck Drivers over 50 years old), the peninsula race from Ensenada to La Paz that was part of the 50th SCORE Baja 1000 celebration.
BFGOODRICH TIRES: RULE THE BAJA
BFGoodrich Tires, the official tire of SCORE for 48 years, was honored after the 2023 season as the SCORE Pit Support Company of the year for the 33rd time.
BFGoodrich Tires has been the choice of 35 of the 56 overall winners of the popular SCORE Baja 500 and 33 of the 56 overall winners of the legendary SCORE Baja 1000. BFGoodrich Tires is also the title sponsor of both iconic races again in 2024.
BFGoodrich Tires also has been the choice of 30 of the 37 overall winners of the SCORE San Felipe 250, all three SCORE Desert Challenge races, the lone SCORE Challenge of Champions in San Felipe, the one SCORE Baja Sur 500 and one of the three overall winners in the SCORE Baja 400.
BFGoodrich Tires has posted a contingency bonus for the overall winner of this year’s race of US$10,000.
